The band was founded in 1973. Its founder, manager and conductor is Professor Stanisław Śmietana.

Initially, the band was an ensemble of music-making youths from and around the “Jastrzębie” Mine Vocational School in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. Since 1990, the band has been made up of students of the Primary and Secondary State Music School in Jastrzębie-Zdrój.

The involvement, skills and talent of the young musicians have been appreciated by juries at reviews, festivals and competitions in Poland and abroad. This resulted in many top prizes and distinctions: 1st place “summa cum laude” at the 41st European Music-Making Youth Festival in Neerpelt (Belgium, 1987), 1st place at the Saxoniade in Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Germany, 1995), 2nd place at the World Concert Band Competition in Valencia (Spain, 1996), gold ribbon at the International Young Musicians’ Festival in Bratislava (Slovakia, 2011) and 1st place at the International Concert Band Competition in Schladming (Austria, 2012).

The band has also received many awards – both national and from the city of Jastrzębie-Zdrój – for the high level of its performance and for dissemination of music culture.

Stanisław Śmietana graduated from the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice in the trombone class of Professor F. Kwiatkowski. He also completed a three-year post-graduate course for concert band conductors.

He is the founder and long-time conductor of the Youth Concert Band in the Basic Vocational Mining School of the “Jastrzębie” Mine in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. He currently heads the “Jas-Mos” Mine Concert Band (since 1976), the Cieszyn Concert Band of the University of Silesia in Katowice (since 1987) and the Youth Concert Band of the State Primary & Secondary Music School in Jastrzębie-Zdrój (since 1990).

He is the founder and organiser of international competitions: the International Youth Concert Band Competition in Jastrzębie-Zdrój (since 1985), the International “Wind Instruments” Competition in Jastrzębie-Zdrój (since 1994) and the International Jastrzębie Flute Competition in Jastrzębie-Zdrój (since 2010).

The Primary and Secondary State Music School in Jastrzębie-Zdrój was established in 1990. Stanisław Śmietana was appointed principal of the school, a position he holds to this day.

In 1996 he obtained his Ph.D. degree at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and was habilitated there in 2002. In 2006 he was nominated as assistant professor at the University of Silesia in Katowice.

His work as conductor is documented by many awards in national and international competitions.

His artistic output also entails six albums of band repertoire.

Stanisław Śmietana is ivolved in the work of juries at international concert band competitions.
