The Silesian String Quartet was founded in 1978 by graduates of the Karol Szymanowski University of Music in Katowice, Poland. More than 120 works, by Polish and foreign composers, were premiered by the Silesian String Quartet, many of them were dedicated to this ensemble. The Silesian String Quartet performed at numerous festivals in many European countries, as well as in theUnited States,Canada,Mexico,Japan andHong Kong. Apart from performances, the ensemble recorded nearly 45 albums, containing mostly contemporary music. The ensemble was awarded many prizes and distinctions.

In 1993 the Silesian Quartet launched an annual chamber music festival held under the motto “Silesian Quartet and its guests”. During this event, chamber works are performed by the Silesian String Quartet and soloists or other ensembles invited to take part in the Festival.
